As I wrote in a previous blog, I’ve gotten my Mother and Stepfather on Passion 4 Life. One of the most painful things for us right now is that my stepfather has started the beginning stages of dementia and the doctors think that he had a minor stroke this past year. This is a man that started his career as a machinist and had a mad passion for golf. After he retired, he pretty much played a round every day.

That’s changed and it seems like it happened over night. He’s easily confused. My mother is afraid to let him drive. He had a problem paying our bill at breakfast one morning because his problem solving skills have decreased. Saddest of all, he wasn’t able to play more than three holes of golf this summer. It’s been really rough on him, the whole family and especially my mother.

We started my stepfather on Passion 4 Life on August 7th. Marshall and I arrived in CT on August 13th. One of the things that my stepfather wanted to do was take Marshall and my brother, Tom, golfing at the country club. He said that he just wanted to do something with just the guys and golf is something that they all have in common. He maintained that he’d play a few holes, and ride the cart the rest of the time. When they were done, Marshall came back to the house and told me that my stepfather had played 14 holes!! That’s more than he’s played all year. We were ecstatic.

It got better after that. Last week my mother called and told me that something is happening with my stepfather. They’ve had a few days where the old Jim is back. He’s physically stronger, not losing his balance when he first stands up, no confusion, focused and lots of energy. I won’t lie to you and say that every day is like that. But, my mother’s view is that even a few days like that are a miracle…and those days are happening more and more often. The next time I see Charles, the creator of Passion 4 Life….he’s getting a really BIG hug from me.

We’ve been at Habitat for Humanity 5 of the last 6 weekends, and spent a week away for my mother’s vow renewal ceremony. And we’re still moving forward.
